About the Area:

Tarrytown is a historic Hudson River village in Westchester County, located approximately 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. Set along the eastern bank of the Hudson River, Tarrytown combines scenic river views, historic architecture, a vibrant and walkable downtown, and convenient access to New York City. Its Main Street and surrounding downtown feature a variety of restaurants, cafés, shops, galleries, and entertainment venues. Residential options range from apartments, condominiums, and townhomes to historic houses, suburban neighborhoods, waterfront residences, and larger estate properties. History:

Tarrytown’s recorded history dates to 1609, when Henry Hudson sailed the river that would later bear his name. The area was originally inhabited by the Weckquaesgeek people, part of the larger Lenape cultural group. During the Dutch colonial period, European settlers established farms and settlements along the Hudson, and much of the area eventually became part of the vast Philipsburg Manor owned by the Philipse family. Following the American Revolution, Tarrytown developed into an important Hudson River port, with sloops carrying agricultural products and other goods to New York City. Steamboat service arrived in the early 19th century, followed by the railroad in 1849, helping transform the community and strengthening its connection to New York City. Tarrytown also became closely associated with author Washington Irving, whose nearby home, Sunnyside, overlooks the Hudson River. Irving's writings, including The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, helped make the surrounding area internationally famous. During the 19th century, wealthy New Yorkers were drawn to the Hudson River Valley and built elaborate estates, including Lyndhurst. Tarrytown was incorporated as a village in 1870 and today retains numerous historic districts, buildings, and landmarks reflecting its long history.

Tarrytown is served by two public school districts, depending on the location of the property. Portions of Tarrytown, including the Pennybridge neighborhood, are served by the highly regarded Irvington Union Free School District. Other areas of Tarrytown are served by the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, which also serves neighboring Sleepy Hollow. Buyers should confirm the school district for a specific property.

Historical Landmarks:

• Lyndhurst is one of the country's outstanding examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Designed by Alexander Jackson Davis beginning in 1838, the estate overlooks the Hudson River and was once home to railroad magnate Jay Gould. Today it is a National Trust for Historic Preservation site.
• Sunnyside, the historic home of author Washington Irving, sits along the Hudson River just south of the village center. Irving's writings helped establish the international reputation of the Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow area.
• The Tarrytown Music Hall was built in 1885 in the Queen Anne style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest theater in Westchester County and continues to host concerts, theater, dance, film, comedy, and community events.
• The Main Street Historic District and Grove Street Historic District preserve numerous examples of Tarrytown's 19th- and early 20th-century architecture.
• The Old Croton Aqueduct, completed in the 19th century to bring fresh water to New York City, passes directly through Tarrytown and today serves as a popular walking and recreational trail.
