About the Area:

Mamaroneck is a vibrant waterfront village in southern Westchester County, located along Long Island Sound approximately 23 miles north of New York City. Known for its picturesque harbor, lively downtown, diverse neighborhoods, and strong sense of community, Mamaroneck combines suburban living with the convenience of a walkable village center and easy access to Manhattan. The Village offers a wide variety of housing, including apartments, condominiums, townhouses, charming older homes, Colonials, Tudors and waterfront properties. Mamaroneck Avenue serves as the heart of the downtown area, with an eclectic mix of restaurants, shops and local businesses. The waterfront and harbor are defining features of the community, offering residents numerous opportunities for boating, recreation and enjoying Long Island Sound.

History:

The name Mamaroneck is Native American in origin and is commonly translated as “the place where the sweet waters fall into the sea.” In 1661, John Richbell, an English merchant living in Oyster Bay, purchased land in the area from the local Siwanoy people. During the 18th and 19th centuries, residents primarily made their living through farming, fishing, lumbering, and milling. The arrival of the New York and New Haven Railroad in 1848 helped transform the area and made Mamaroneck increasingly accessible to New York City. Its location on Long Island Sound also helped establish the community as a popular summer destination. The Village of Mamaroneck was incorporated in 1895. Unusually, the Village lies within two separate towns: the Town of Mamaroneck and the Town of Rye. Today, the Village retains much of its historic character while offering a lively downtown, established residential neighborhoods, and an active waterfront community.

Education/Academics:

Most of the Village of Mamaroneck is served by the Mamaroneck Union Free School District, while the Rye Neck portion of the Village is served by the Rye Neck Union Free School District. The Mamaroneck Union Free School District serves approximately 5,300 students and includes four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.
